Just like in real life, there are many available professions that a character can have. Some of the more common ones are listed below with a little about what they do.

Advocate - Advocates or lawyers come in all shapes and sizes and personalities. They all have different reasons for becoming a lawyer and about the only thing that is common between them is their knowledge of the law, though even with some this might be considered to be slightly lacking. Some will become an Advocate out of an honest desire to make sure that justice is done others because it gives them a chance to revenge supposed wrongs, or to help people fight a corrupt system. Some do it simply for the money.

Armourer - With similar skills to that of a blacksmith or a weaponsmith, the armourer is highly skilled in the art of shaping metals. Unlike the others it is not tools or weapons that he crafts, but suits of armour. Finely linked chain mail, bronze greaves and carefully crafted breast plates. All of these are the realm of the armourer. He is also just as often skilled with leather working abilities so as to fashion suits of leather armour, or to fashion the straps and padding that goes under the steel or bronze.

Barmaid - Although barmaids tend to come in all shapes and sizes, they nearly all have a common element, that they attract people to them and hence the bar where they work. This subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, mixing of various elements creates a large array of serving ladies who work at the various establishments about the city. Each tavern tends to have its own style and requirements. In places such as the Sailor’s Arms a barmaid needs a good jibe and a fast knee against sailors who have been away at sea for several weeks, while in the slum side Hag’s Head a barmaid’s knife skills might be called for use instead or perhaps just the girl’s ability to dance and show the clients a good time is the important factor, like for those that take jobs in the Dove’s Cry.

Bartender - The bartender tends to be a figure that rarely is seen other than behind his bar, in reality he has many functions. Though chiefly there to serve drinks, these hardworking men are responsible for whatever happens in their bars. This can mean anything from suggesting that unruly customers depart, to breaking up any fights or other publicly unacceptable behaviour. Bartenders are also responsible for their staff and to the owner for the money that is gathered throughout opening hours.

Blacksmith - Possibly one of the most respected trades in the city, the blacksmith is required by virtually everyone. From those that need raw metal materials to the people that have need of tools or just to get their horse shod, nearly everyone in the city will pass through a smithy sooner of later. Blacksmiths are workers of metals, extracting the copper, tin and iron then melting them into bronze and steel ingots. From there they can forge the metal into almost any tool required, working their hammer to craft the parts and items that the city runs on. Without these strong men and women, Last Haven would cease to function and exist.

Brewer - Without these folk bar-staff would be out of a job and partiers would be looking for something else to both quench their thirst and to give themselves that high that alcohol brings. Brewers are able to turn hops into beer and ale, while the best of them has learned the principles of distilling and wine making. They can make most things into a form of alcohol if given access to the right equipment and enough time to experiment.

Carpenter - These men of wood working are responsible for nearly everything wooden inside of Last Haven. From the tables and chairs that people sit on to the very houses that they live in, carpenters are there doing the work to craft the best quality goods they can. Chests, wardrobes and beds, these are just some of the potential things that those of lower skills can make, while the best are able to build whole houses and sturdy wagons. It takes a good eye and a steady hand, as well as a flair for the artistic to become one of the city’s finest carpenters.

Cobbler - If it fits onto your feet then the odds are that one of these people made it. Boots and shoes are their specialties, with sandals and slippers being their second most sought after items. They have skills in working leather as well as cloth to create the items they do, velvet for slippers and hard leather for working boots.

Cook - While there are a lot of people that can cook, not all are cooks. Of course there are a huge amount of cooks too, and they are found everywhere. Taverns quite often have their own cook who is responsible for providing the patrons and guests their meals. Noble families will all have at least one cook and several of the more well to do middle classed families may also employ a cook. Some cooks simply work in their own kitchen and then take their goods to the market, selling to larger merchants or attempting to tempt passers by with the wondrous scents of food.

Entertainers:
There are various subclasses of Entertainer. But they are all considered Entertainers and Performing artists. and thus are known by profession as an Entertainer. The following are the subclasses of Entertainer and what each does:

Actor - Actors are one of the many types of entertainers that work about the city. Actors can be anywhere from the professionals who put on the plays at the theatre, to small groups that simply do street shows for a handful of people, to those that cater for parties and private functions.

Bard - These folk are the jack of-all-trades of the entertainment side of the city. Unlike Actors, singers and dancers, the Bard needs a bit of everything and more besides. Storytellers and jokers, they sing, dance and excite their ways into people’s hearts. The best bards can make a story come to life before their listeners, using music and song to add effects into their tales of wonder. Their skills vary widely, as do their prospects. One day they might be recounting the tales of great heroes at a royal banquet, then the next busking for a few coppers to buy bread.

Dancer - These people are skilled in the art of dancing. They have a few paths that they can follow, many choose to perform in troupes at parties and festivities, others choose the stability of teaching the art of dance to others. The best and most skilled dancers will often come up with new routines for thier troupes and new dances for the general populace to unveil at truly special events.

Musician - Entertainers that are skilled with their instruments fall into the category of musicians. While some may be able to sing as well as play, for the most part those that are called musicians tend to concentrate on playing their music. With fourteen instruments to play there is a lot of variety between them. Highly skilled Musicians can write the score for songs, or simply score their own music, playing it without any lyrics at all. Most functions and parties will hire at least one musician, sometimes more depending on the event.

Farmer - These men and women of the soil are the backs that allow Last Haven to survive. If the city would not run without a blacksmith, it wouldn’t eat without the farmers. Whether they are tillers of the soil, or orchard managers, they are the ones that bring the nutricious food of the earth into the city and hence feed the population and keep them healthy. Perhaps then it is almost ironic that they are often the most harshly treated of all of the City’s citizens. Without the ability produce advanced technology, many farmers feel they are being disadvantaged for no good reason and with the farmers not actually owning the land they work. The crops and the land, all the land in the Valley belongs to the nobles and the farmers are merely paid to work the land. Those that do 'own' land are pioneers or Outsiders who are eking out an existence from the wildlands on the edge of the valley, irrigating it and making it fertile once more. Of course this places them in even greater danger of raids and wild animals than their fellows inside the valley, and they too lack the protections of a wall or guard patrols. All in all a farmer’s life is hard, and yet it is also very rewarding for those who love the soil and land. ((Note: -Most- Farmers, as mentioned, live outside of the city gates. As there is no IC grid outside of the city yet Farmer Characters will not be approved for RP until such time when the Valley opens.))

Guard - See: Watchman.

Healer - Almost to the man and woman, healers are greatly compassionate. It is this that drives them to their work, the work of healing the sick and injured. Often this can be depressing, and yet each failure is wiped aside with the triumphs of those patients that recover to full heath. More often than not a healer has a wide knowledge of healing herbs, where to find them and what to use them for. Feverfew and white willow, lavender and carrot seeds, a skilled healer will know how to use all of them.

Hunter - Some food cannot be farmed, and for those game animals it is the Hunters who supply the meats. Many are typically loners and wilderness men, hardened by their battle with the wilds; they thrive on the challenge and the hunt. Others have turned hunter to simply provide food and coins for their families, doing the best they can against the environment. Still others work both the fringes and even deeper into the wilds not as harvesters of the creatures, but maintainers of the wilds. They will hunt and remove old animals that are past time, or the injured who would weaken the herd. Regardless of what the Hunter’s motives, all are skilled in the ways of the wild and the tracking of quarry.

Jeweler - With the skills to craft jewelry these people are highly sought after by the rich. Starting with just the simplest of uncut gems, a jeweler can cut them into exquisite shapes and set them into the finest of precious metals. From simple copper rings and bracelets for the lower classes to highly prized platinum and diamonds for Royalty, all of it is crafted by these workers.

Judge - Like any city that has laws, Last Haven has its judges. These men are appointed by the council and they are the ones that determine guilt or innocence as well as dispensation justice. Judges are known for their knowledge of the law as well as their ability to impartially dispense it. They are mostly very upstanding citizens of the City and as the Council’s representatives they will do their utmost to protect that image.

Knight - There are two forms of Knight. The first are elite Noble and Gentry warriors who have completed training from a very young age as squires and have received the position of a Knight of Last Haven from the King himself. This grand title comes with a vast responsibility, the looking after and protecting of the city and its surrounding areas. These Knights are awarded armour and a mount, and should they progress in the ranks and live long enough to perform great service, then they may even earn title to a parcel of land for themselves.

Lady-In-waiting - These young ladies are the servants to powerful noblewomen, and often they become close friends confidents and more. They are expected to act with the highest dignity and respect for all of the Noblewoman’s family and in return they are expected to be treated well by the family as they are under the Noblewoman’s protection. Their duties including helping the noblewomen dress and undress, bathe, select clothing, doing personal shopping, carrying messages and even protecting the Noblewoman with her life if needed. Because of this many Ladies-in-waiting are just as highly skilled in a form of concealed weapon, such as a dagger or even hand-crossbows as well as economic type skills and fashion.

Merchant - Being a merchant can be a very stress filled job. While many of the goods the city needs to run can be made in the city itself, or found in the areas nearby there are things that cannot, and it is these that the merchants must bring into the city. Of course this itself is a highly risky business as transport by sea is subject to storms and pirates while transportation overland can just as easily result in losses to Elven raiding parties or other bandits of the wastelands. While most merchants specialize in shipping only one or two goods into Last Haven, they hate to see their wagons or ships returning empty and thus whenever they can gather in an over supply of local goods, a wise merchant will be trading that with those people living in the far off cities and strongholds that still survive as Last Haven does.

Midwife - For many women the midwife is one of the most important people in the city. Her presence during a woman’s pregnancy and at the actual birth can mean the difference between life and death for both mother and child. She knows which herbs to administer to prevent pain and which to give to ease the birth itself, as well as dulling things such as morning sickness early on in the pregnancy. Midwives are also usually knowledgeable about the raising of young children in their formative years and so are always great places to find information on child rearing.

Miner - This is a dark, dusty and more often than not a dangerous job that only the hardy few would dream of attempting. Because most mining need to be do well away from the city itself, miners need to keep their wits about them as they travel and work. Cave-ins, breaking through into underground streams or caverns, wild animal attacks, elvish attacks and brigands are only just a few of the dangers that can dog the miner’s footsteps. Yet with all that they return to their claims digging for the precious metals, ores and stones that help to keep Last Haven running.

Nanny - When Nobles or the higher middle classed are too busy, or too proud, to deal with the raising of their own children, then a nanny is required. They generally have very good child rearing skills and they understand the needs of looking after the children. In cases were a father’s wife has died a early death, a Nanny will also be used to provide for the children and nurture them as a mother. The role of a Nanny varies greatly with the number of children she is looking after but generally includes bathing, teaching, feeding and general caring for them.

Perfumer - If you always want to smell nice then this would have to be the job. Drawing the natural scents from plants and fruit to then be made into an essence that reacts with the human skin and produces a delightful fragrance is the work of the perfumers. Roses, apples, pine, peaches, musk, wildflowers, and more. These scents keep their clients smelling good, and also coming back for more week after week.

Priest - Depending on whom you ask, these men and women are the most important people in the city, or the least. Representatives of the gods, they are ordained to spread the teaching and will of their chosen deity amongst the followers of that god, though many attempt to also push their views onto ours that follow a different member of the pantheon. Priests are responsible for performing marriages, funerals and rites of passage as well as conducting services of prayer and worship. Many have either their god’s, or their own, agenda as well leading to a complex web which binds the religious community.

Rancher - Many of these young boys and girls often want to grow up to be soldiers or even knights. They are responsible for the maintenance and care of the horses that are in their stables, feeding and watering them, taking them out for a run each day and keeping them ready for their owners should they be needed in a hurry. All of the gear that is kept with the horse is the stablehand’s job and they are to see that saddles and bridles are well kept and oiled, that any damage to barding or other equipment is repaired and ready. It is a hard job and often it receives little thanks from the owners, but every stablehand knows how much their work is appreciated by the horses.

Soldier - Armed to the teeth and ready to use them. Soldiers are the other protectors of the city. Unlike the guard they have little care for criminals, but when an attack comes against the city they are there and ready to do battle with the enemy. With a number of different weapons and skills, these men at arms are capable of defending the city from most threats be it elven raiders of wild beasts of the wastelands. A soldier’s life can be filled with excitement, bravery and courage, but it can also be cut short just as easily by an arrow or spear. Soldiers are among the toughest of the city’s citizens but then they also have one of the toughest jobs to do as well.

Stablehand - Many of these young boys and girls often want to grow up to be soldiers or even knights.

Tailor - Looking for a fashionable suit of clothing, you need to see a tailor or seamstress. As skilled in the ways of cloth as builders are in stone and wood, tailors can produce anything from a simple and mundane cotton tunic, to the elegant flair of a silk ball gown. Tailors craft the fashion that will be worn about the city the coming year, entering their works into the fashion show of the Winter Ball. In a way they are the ecsape from reality as well as the feet of reality as they make both the clothing that is hardwearing for those that have need of it everyday, the most stunning and impractical clothing for one off occasions such as balls and weddings.

Teacher - The teachers of the city are responsible for the upbringing and tutorage of the next generation. It is they that teach the young men how to count so that they may know how to measure wood, or the number of their enemies, how to read and how to wield a weapon or armour. The girls are taught similar things, though their studies also can include cooking and sewing as well as other wifely duties. For the most part the children and their parents set the course that is required of them, and the teachers do their best to tutor them. Nobles as well as rich middle-classed people may hire their own teachers for their children.

Templar Knight - A Holy Order of Knights. Hailing from all classes except for outcasts, the Paladin order of Woraden is based about a very strict code of conduct and behaviours. These knights are also fearful warriors who have earned their armour, yet they humbly fight alongside those whose knighthood was a mere birthright.

Trader - While similar to a merchant in the way that a they operate, traders are limited strictly to inside the city only. Each shop will have its own line of goods and have its own suppliers who keep the trader supplied with items. These suppliers could be craftsmen or merchants. They act as a go between the suppliers and the customers, allowing unknown crafters to quickly make a name for themselves by selling through a well known and respected store.

Watchman - It is a hard job, and a thankless one being a City Guard or Watchman as they are officially called. To soldiers the guard is an amateur, getting in their way, to the criminals they are the hated enemy, interfering in every good plan, to the everyday person they are often seen as those waiting to strike at the smallest infringement of law. Yet for all of this, the guards are probably the proudest and most loyal of Last Haven’s citizens. When there is a crime, they will be the first to respond, investigating as much as they can, tracking down the criminal. If the city is under attack they will be on the walls and in the trenches with the best of the soldiers, doing their job, protecting the city. At times of peace they will be the one that climbs a tree to rescue a kitten, or seeks out a lost child. In the end they say the rewards are worth it, the smile from a grateful child, and the thanks from those whom justice has served. That is what makes this job special, and what makes the Watchmen continue to strap on their armour every day.

Weaponsmith - Blessed with similar skills to those of the Armourer and blacksmith, the weaponsmith is a master of crafting metals. Blades, maces, flails, any hand held melee weapon is the weaponsmith’s area of expertise, including arrowheads and spears. He generally has a small amount of wood working to make staves and spears as well as leather working skills for slings and binding the handles of his weapons. He knows how to fold the steel in a blade multiple times so that it keeps a finely honed edge or how to create a thin, and yet strong dagger blade. Any who wish to have a weapon of quality will seek out the most skilled Weaponsmiths, getting them to craft them the perfect weapon.

Whore - Although this description really covers all people that give sex for money, there are really four very distinct groups in the city that it covers: The Braeian Doxies, Courteseans, Parlour Whores, and Streetwalkers.
The Temple Prostitutes of Braeia are called Braeian Doxies, or Doxies or Doxy for short. And for a donation to the temple, they can be anyones for a night of pure indulgence. Visiting a Doxy isn't considered irreprehensible even in the least in social standards. worshippers are able to indulge their excesses with one of the male or female prostitutes who work for the temple. When a goddess mixes money, sex and excess all into one portfolio this really is but the logical result. This act is never viewed as wrong, nor being unfaithful, either for the Temple Prostitute nor the worshipper, even if one or both are married, as they are merely pleasing their goddess in the correct manner and so Temple Prostitutes may generally hold any rank up to Middle Class. While it is not viewed as unseemly for Nobles to take part in these devotional sessions, acting for the temple in such a way would be frowned on by the family and those that a Noble was aligned with. Pregnancies from this worship are extremely rare as the Temple provides a very high class herbal mixture that seems to be extremely effective at preventing pregnancies. Temple prostitutes are about an equal mix of both male and female.
The second group of Whores are those that work for a brothel. They are considered outcasts, usually cut off from family and past when they started working. Unlike Temple Prostitutes, these girls are paid directly and they then pay a portion of that income to the brothel for their room and board. Such women are looked down on to some degree by society, however it is understood that they provide a useful service so as long as they recognise their place in society and do not try and rise above it they are accepted. All parlour prostitutes are women and they are responsible to avoid pregnancy or deal with it when it occurs. The parlour’s owner may help with potions and `herbs if required.
The third group are outcasts almost to the outcasts. Streetwalkers and ladies of the night, these women, and rarely men, are willing to attempt to pick up anyone that is willing to pay them. They are for a large part Half-elves and often as not they are abused and mistreated but the populace. Even Parlour whores look down on a Streetwalker.
The final type of Whore is also a privateer, and yet she is far more specialized. The Courtesan targets the rich, be it nobles or middle classed. They act as escorts to meals and parties, as well as being the entertainment at some parties. Their prices tend to be very high, but so are their standards. They dress and act the part, easily being able to be mistaken for a Noblewoman by those that do not know better. Like a Temple Prostitute their social class can rise above outcast and often they are themselves high lower to middle classed. No Courtesan will become a noble however, unless it is though marriage, and such a event occurring would certainly cause quite a stir.

Obviously this list is not exhaustive in the professions that a character becomes and what they do will depend on their skills, but it does give an example of what is available.
